Nearly 40 per cent of fireworks injuries are to bystanders. Four out of every five fireworks injuries happen to males between the ages of 22-44 and boys between 12-14 years of age.

The cost of treating a fireworks injury far outweighs the cost of a single fireworks package, which is on an average about Rs 40.

Pollution levels rise by about 6-10 per cent during Diwali, with Nitrous Oxide and Sulphur Dioxide levels rising considerably

Quick remedies and damage control

  • Do not rub eyes. If any eye tissue is torn, rubbing might push out the eye's contents and cause more damage.
  • Do not attempt to rinse out the eye. This can be even more damaging than rubbing.
  • Do not splash water if the injury appears to be inside the eye.
  • For eye-lid burn, cool water helps.
  • Use the corner of a soft clean cloth to draw particles out or hold eyelids open and flush eyes continuously with water.
  • If a particle is large or stuck in the eye, do not attempt to remove it.
  • If there is any chemical that has entered the eyes immediately irrigate the eyes and under the eyelids with water.
  • Protect the eye with a spherical shaped object – this can be created with a clean cup-shaped shield against the bones surrounding the eye: brow, cheek and bridge of the nose. Fix the protective object with tape temporarily.
  • Do not implement home remedies or herbal concoctions or ointments without consulting an eye expert or doctor.
  • Keep eyes closed and seek an eye doctor immediately.

In case of a burn rinse the area without scrubbing and immerse it in cold water; do not use ice water. Blot the area dry and cover it using sterile gauze or a clean cloth. If the burn is chemical then flush the exposed area with cool water immediately for 15 to 20 minutes.

Post Diwali, visit an optometrist and get an eye check-up to make sure there is no damage to eyes. This will help identify any issues with eyesight and guide you to take corrective actions.
