At the outset, Congress in Karnataka state deciding to celebrate the anniversary of erstwhile Mysuru ruler when none of Congress stalwarts like Devarj Urs and Gundu Rao ever broached the subject during their regime is thus a clear indicator that the sudden love evinced by Siddaramaiah towards Tipu Sultan is not only suspicious but covers the party\'s shortcomings and failures.

At the outset, Congress in Karnataka state deciding to celebrate the anniversary of erstwhile Mysuru ruler when none of Congress stalwarts like Devarj Urs and Gundu Rao ever broached the subject during their regime is thus a clear indicator that the sudden love evinced by Siddaramaiah towards Tipu Sultan is not only suspicious but covers the party's shortcomings and failures.

As it is, the state cannot expect to spend its resources for celebrations of any monarch leave alone Tipu Sultan whose regime is not without blemish or killings. Not long ago, seasoned actor Girish Karnad vociferously condemned Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore's writings as boring and nonsense when the whole nation admires and respects the greatness of the man. One wonders as to why Karnad who has been silent all these years now suddenly comes out in favour of celebrations when the credentials of the monarch as a secular leader are in doubt because of conflicting reports that the ruler was anti-Hindu and anti-Kannada.

To add to the confusion, UP Minister Azam Khan coming out with a new theory that Tipu wore a ring engraved with Lord Rama on it and then asking the Prime Minister who is on a visit to United Kingdom to strive to bring it back from London museum is not only amusing but goes to show how the present bunch of leaders rulers stoop to reap brownie points. It is high time, a high-level debate of all political parties is convened to decide such sensitive issues, otherwise the nation may witness violence as and when any state decides to celebrate monarchs of the bygone era on a grand scale to build vote banks and nothing else.
