He was 71 and is survived by his wife, two sons and a daughter. A hugely gifted player in his heyday, his playing style that came naturally, thanks to his athletic built, earned him plaudits even from his opponents in international outings.

His popularity was such that he represented East Bengal, Mohan Bagan and Mohammeden Sporting in different periods between 1965 and 1972.

He was the fulcrum of his respective teams in every premier tournament in those days when football was on the top of the popularity charts in Hyderabad.

That apart, John Victor served with distinction as the coach of the national team in 1983 and 1984 and Andhra Pradesh State team from 1985 to 2002 besides honing talent as the coach and DSDO of Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh (SAAP) from 1982 to 2006. Additionally, he was also the coach of Maharashtra and Bihar State teams.

Honouring his contributions towards enlivening the standards in West Bengal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee presented him with a lifetime achievement award in 2012.

On hearing the tragic news, the Telangana Football Association (TFA) paid homage to the son of the soil during a condolence meeting that was held in the Association office Wednesdayafternoon.

Association President and Secretary, Dr Mohd Ali Rafat and G P Palguna, office-bearers, senior players and members of the Referees Association recalled the glory days of John Victor, whose younger brother Victor Amalraj is an accomplished player who also led India.

Meanwhile, Hyderabad Glove FC held a condolence meeting and paid homage to the ‘very simple and honest person’ whose absence would be felt by the football community as a whole. Club Secretary M A Wahab Ansari along with Syed Sadi recalled their association with the departed soul.
