In recognition of National Lung Cancer Awareness Month, Panacea Biotec organised a programme on Wednesday.

The event was organised to raise awareness and provide education about lung cancer and how it can be prevented and treated. Dr Sadashivudu Gundeti, Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS), addressed the students at Wesley College in Secunderabad and explained about the main causes of lung cancer.

85-90 per cent of lung cancer causes due to smoking. The best way to reduce one’s risk of developing lung cancer and other respiratory complications is to quit smoking.

Explaining the significance of awareness, Dr Sadashivudu Gundeti said, “One way to raise awareness and support lung cancer patients is to tell those around us the truth about lung cancer. This understanding can create waves of support and aid to those who need our help.”

Symptoms of lung cancer include change in mucus, chest or back pain, coughing up blood and difficulty in swallowing. Tests that may be used to diagnose lung cancer include chest X-rays, CT and PET scans, bronchoscopy and needle biopsies.

“If you are a current or former smoker and over the age of 55, you may be a candidate for a low-dose CT scan screening that can offer early detection of lung cancer, potentially at its earliest stages,” said the doctor.

He highlighted the risk factors to be aware of in order to detect lung cancer at the earliest stage. While most understand that smoking is the single greatest risk factor for lung cancer, other lesser known risk factors include environment and genetics.
