When presented to the Hospital with a big hump in his back, the conduction was diagnosed by Dr Surya Prakash Rao V, Senior Spine Surgery consultant. The condition had progressed to the brink of paralysis of legs.

Dr Surya performed a procedure called ‘Vertebral Column Resection’, which involves resection and reshaping of the bones of the spinal column so that the deformity is effectively corrected and normal alignment is restored.

“One of the biggest challenges during the surgery was to prevent development of any neurological impairment in the patient. By monitoring the spinal cord for neurological issues during this complex procedure a safe outcome was obtained,” said the doctor.

Kyphotic deformities are serious conditions which affect children. Most of these deformities start in the early child hood due to some congenital malformations of spine or due to tuberculosis infection of the spinal column. Due to severe bending of spine, these children suffer not only from the social stigma of the deformity but, also from the medical side affects like problems in breathing and weakness or paralysis in the legs.

The child is reported to be showing proper recovery two months after the surgery.
