The Telangana Hijra Intersex Transgender Samithi celebrated the ‘Transgender Samsmarana Dinam’ at Dharna Chowk in Indira Park on Friday by lighting candles in memory of the martyrs, who lost their lives for the transgender community cause.

Every year, the Community comes together on November 20 and take pledge to fight against transphobia with all their might.

About 90 per cent of trans-people attempt suicide at some point in their lives. Speaking on the matter, Bittu, an active member of the Transgender Community said, “In January this year Pravallika was brutally murdered in Kukatpally; her killer is out on bail and continues to terrorise the trans-community. Two other trans-women were murdered; one in Hyderabad and other in Vizag this year. A young transgender girl committed suicide in Uppal (June 2015). Three more trans- people lost their lives to AIDS.

“These are the people who have died in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh alone but, countless people have been killed just for being transgender around the world. We will persevere strongly till our lives are protected, recognised and implemented as per the NALSA Supreme Court Judgment,” concluded Bittu.
