Rail transportation is greener than travel by road and that has been validated yet again in a recent study. The Multi-Modal Transport System (MMTS) has taken over the significant traffic load and effectively brought down the congestion problems on city roads.

There are 1.5 lakh passengers using MMTS on various routes on a daily basis and as a result the total equivalent CO2 emission in absence of MMTS is calculated as 741 tons per annum. Experts say that in the absence of MMTS, 60 per cent of the existing MMTS passengers would have travelled by buses, 10 per cent in cars, 15 per cent by auto and 15 per cent on two-wheelers; the estimated pollution (see box) would have been astronomical.

South Central Railway (SCR) runs 121 services of MMTS in Falaknuma – Lingampalli, Secunderabad – Hyderabad routes covering 43 kms and 26 stations with a total 9 rakes of 81 coaches of electrical multiple units. Social scientists claim that one should not judge the service purely on the cost-benefit-analysis mode but look at the larger picture.
