Chacha Nehru Park is a small park located in Masab Tank in central zone of GHMC limits. Spread over 13 acres, it serves as the focal point for morning walkers and functions as a children’s playground with slides, swings and see-saws. The Park has long lawns and ample space for walkers.

The entry is free for morning walkers from 5.00 am to 8.00 am; visitors fee is Re 1 for children and Rs 3 for adults from 8.00 am to 8.00 pm The Park is maintained by GHMC under the administrative control and supervision of the Deputy Director of Horticulture and Parks wing of Central Zone.

Major landmarks are Golconda Hotel, JNTU College of Fine Arts and Government Polytechnic College. It is located 25 km away from the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport and 15 km from the Secunderabad Railway Station. TSRTC buses are available to all parts of the city. The nearest MMTS station is Lakdi-ka-Pul.

History

The Park was opened for public on Children’s Day in 1988; it was inaugurated by then Governor of Andhra Pradesh Kumudbhen Manishankar Joshi.

According to history, “Maa-Sahaba” was a title endowed on Hayat Baksh Begum, wife of Qutub Shahi VI.

The ‘Talab’ or tank was built by Khanum Agha (his mother), but it become famous after his wife as ‘Talab-e-Maa-Sahaba’.

The upgraded ‘Maa Sahaba Talab’ got anglicised to Masab Tank, which is now turned into a cesspool in the park.

The horticulture officer of GHMC Malini said, “Daily, around 500 people come and enjoy the glimpse of the Park. The GHMC is planning to develop it to suit the infrastructure requirements.”

Problems

According to locals, water supply is irregular in addition to dry bore wells due to depleting ground water level. The pond is shrinking and has been polluted with the sewerage line passing through. There is a need for Sewerage Treatment Plant to recycle the drain water. Though the Park is famous for children play activities, major play equipment were broken and unusable.
