Young and aspiring designers must believe in their ideas and should start from scratch to achieve milestones, famous designer Eames Demetrios said in New Delhi on Wednesday.

“Everyone has to start from somewhere. Things do not come on their own... Young designers should start from scratch and must have a belief on their own ideas,” Demetrios said.

While exhibiting his collection of iconic Eames chair and furniture here at Vasant Continental Hotel, Eamas said India was his dream destination for the exhibition.

“India has been a dream place for me to exhibit my collection... My family had a strong connection with India and I have been hearing stories from my childhood about artists from India,” he said. The pocket edition of the exhibition was just a start, he said and that there will be a full fledged show coming soon to India.

Demetrios, who has written a book on design and is the grandson of Eames Office founders, Charles and Ray Eames, believes that "design is a life skill and not a professional skill”.

The exhibition first opened in Hong-Kong Design Institute as part of the Herman Miller's design festival in 2011 and later travelled to other countries like Jakarta, Singapore and Thailand. “The idea of the exhibition is how ideas and creations can become immortal and remain influential in contemporary life,” he added.

In India, its next destination after the national capital is Bengaluru and starts there on Thursday. He also said that young designers must believe in his definition of design which was “willingness to surrender”.
