Creative display for liver care

Aiming to encourage organ transplants as well as donations, The Liver Foundation was inaugurated on Wednesday at Lakdikapul in the presence of the State Health Minister, doctors from the city as well as fashion designer Shravan Kumar and many celebrities who walked the ramp, showcasing his latest bridal collection.

The foundation was launched by Telangana Health Minister Laxma Reddy and Principal Secretary of State Rajesh Tewari. Tom Cherian HOD of liver surgery and transplantation for CARE Hospitals, Prof Kakarla Subba Rao former director of NIMS, Dr Ramani, director of medical education, Shivaprasad Joint Commissioner Police, spoke at the event.

Tom Cherian, who is also a professor of liver transplantation at NIMS was the man behind the idea of starting the Foundation. He said, “There is certainly the alcohol connection to liver cirrhosis, but that is not the only reason for diseases of the liver. Another big disease is Hepatitis C, B as well as obesity are also causes. 30 per cent of liver transplants I did last year are due to Fatty Liver Disease.”

Encouraging people in the ongoing fight against liver disease, Kakarla Subba Rao said, “The first thing to do is to implement and encourage prevention and the second, is to spread awareness.” The Liver Foundation has planned campaigns such as ‘Vaccinate 2 Eliminate’, ‘Liver Child’ and also a liver disease helpline number called ‘Good Advice Saves Lives’.

Designer Shravan Kumar showcased his latest bridal collection with famous names such as Nani and singer Smitha. The designer dedicated the collection to the NGO as his own brother was treated by Tom Cherian.
