The International Day of People with Disability was observed by the South Central Railway (SCR) Mazdoor Union on Monday.

About 300 disabled employees took part in the event in which K Sivakumar, Divisional Secretary of the Union proposed a declaration and resolution wherein demands, such as barrier free working environment, proper parking space and extension of facilities to disabled employees were placed.

Speaking at the event, noted educationist Dr Chukka Ramaiah explained the circumstances and causes of disability and that it was not fate as is being probated. “It was the prerogative of Unions and others to look after the differentially-abled of the society,” he advised.

Malla Reddy, Assistant Director, Department of Welfare of Disabled, explained the salient features of the legislations pertaining to disabled employees.

In addition, the event felicitated outstanding disabled sportsmen Sanjeeviah, Saitsh and Amaranth. Other members of the Union present were Treasurer Sreedhar and President K Srinivas.
