Cardiologists at Apollo Hospitals in Hyderaguda, Hyderabad, Dr V Surya Prakasa Rao, HOD-Cardiology and Dr PLN Kapardhi, Director, Cathlab Services performed a pioneering procedure on a middle-aged male patient suffering from Chronic Total Occlusion.

In a first-of-its-kind procedure, the surgery was performed using a Cross Boss and Stingray Device. Chronic Total Occlusion (CTO) is a hardened 100 per cent block in coronary artery, which causes cardiac pain on exertion.

This patient had been complaining of chest discomfort on walking for the last few months. After an ECG and a coronary Angiogram, it was indicated that he had blockage of a major blood vessel supplying blood from heart, with hard fibrotic calcific plaque.

Doctors at Apollo diagnosed it as an appropriate case for CTO-PCI Technique, and offered to clear the block and put a Drug Eluting Stent without surgery.

Using the Cross Boss and stingray device the CTO was successfully cleared under local anesthesia. The procedure took upto two hours and the patient was discharged after 48 hours.
