Hyderabad has been home to several Sufi saints since a very long time. In attempts to preserve the tradition, a tribute will be paid to the legendary 13th century Sufi poet Hazrath Amir Khusrau Chisti. The festival titled ‘Jashan-e-Khusrau’ is the 3rd Annual International Sufi Festival, and is set to take place from December 12 – 14.

Hyderabad has been home to several Sufi saints since a very long time. In attempts to preserve the tradition, a tribute will be paid to the legendary 13th century Sufi poet Hazrath Amir Khusrau Chisti. The festival titled ‘Jashan-e-Khusrau’ is the 3rd Annual International Sufi Festival, and is set to take place from December 12 – 14.

The all India Markazi Majlis-e-Chishtia, a Sufi organisation in collaboration with Department of Tourism and Culture government of Telangana, will be organising programmes to promote “universal peace, communal harmony and national integration”. The three-day fest will be a musical event featuring Sufi programmes (Sufiyana Kalam or poetry in Hindi and Persian) at different venues across the city.

Each day of the festival has a special focus. The first day’s programme is called ‘Bahar-e-Khusrau’, and will be held at Public Gardens on Saturday. Pandit Dhananjay Kaul, a renowned Sufi singer will perform Sufiyana Kalam (poetry) of Hazrat Amir Khusrau, in his inimitable full throated and bold style.

Bahar-e-Khusrau will be inaugurated by minister KT Rama Rao and will have other dignitaries like Azmira Chandu Lal, minister of tourism AK Khan, director general, Anti-Corruption Bureau and others. On the second day, ‘Rang-e-Khusrau’ will be held at Chowmohalla Palace.

Ustaad Mazhar Ali Khan and Ustaad Jawaad Ali Khan, grandsons of Ustaad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan will present a unique Sufi musical programme in their masterly style on this day. The last day’s programme ‘Mehfil-e-Khusrau’ will have a Sama (Qawwali) programme held at Dargah Urdu Shareef at Gulzar Houz.

This unique Sufi festival highlights the concept of communal harmony for which Hazrath Amir Khusrau stood for. A Sufi, Amir Khusrau was the disciple of Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya of the Chisti order, who brought Sufi spiritual music and poetry to the capital in the 13th century. Khusrau, who is known as the father of Sufi music, of Qawwali Khayal and Tarana music wrote in Persian and Hindavi. His oeuvre of work includes ghazals, masnavi, qata, rubai, do-deti and the tarki bhand. Entry for the festival is free and e-passes are available on the website: www.jashanekhusrau.com
