Harish Rao promises ESI Card for hamalis

The Minister for Irrigation and Marketing T Harish Rao inaugurated ‘Manakuragayalu’ Project at the Bowenpally Vegetable Market in Secunderabad on Wednesday.

The project comes with facilities like segregation sheds, grading equipment and cold storages.

“The Hamalis are the backbone for Market Yards. They need medical facilities, ESI cards and better wages for their welfare of their families and children,” said Harish Rao and promised to provide ESI Cards and a dispensary for the medical services of the 3,000 hamalis working at the Yard.

Appreciating the initiative taken up by the State government for the betterment of the farming community and for the consumers at large, Director of Agriculture Market Committees Dr A Sarat said, “The objective of the "Mana Kuragayalu" scheme is for effective vegetable supply chain to improve income of the farmers while ensuring affordable quality of vegetables to the consumers.”

The Mana kuragayalu is developed with a cost of Rs 276 10 lakh. It has a rest house facility for Hamalis built at a cost of Rs 18 lakh.

Home Minister Nayani Narasimha Reddy, Excise Minister Padama Rao, Minister for Cinematography and Commercial Taxes Tallasani Yadav, Cantonment MLA G Sayanna jointly appealed to Rao to consider sympathetically, the genuine demand of Hamalis for providing two bedroom apartments under the Government scheme for which they richly deserve.

With respect to this, Rao said that the provision is being considered for approval, provided if sufficient place is available in the Market Yard.
