Capturing the traditions of India in his wardrobe is not the only thing Gaurang Shah managed to do. He also bagged the Audi Ritz Most Admired Fashion Icon of the Year Award recently in a ceremony held in Bengaluru.

Gaurang Shah is better known as a self-taught designer who creates timeless pieces, handcrafted by his team of weavers from across the country. His collections include materials such as khadi, cotton and silk, using the jamdani weaving method.

The designer claims that he is constantly inspired by all things Indian, such as the Taj Mahal, temples of South India, Panchatantra stories, etc. “I realised early on that for the technique I follow (jamdani), the word ‘impossible’ does not exist.

Thanks to my weavers for taking the challenges I throw at them season after season, and thanks to the judges for acknowledging the work that goes behind creating hand-woven fabrics,” he said.

The annual Audi Ritz Icon Awards honours inspiring personalities from different fields on a national platform. The winners in other categories included KT Rama Rao, IT Minister, Govt of Telangana, and actors Vidya Balan and Ram Charan Teja.
