Oxford University Press (OUP) launched its first edition of the ‘English-English-Urdu Dictionary’ at the 19th All India Urdu Book Fair in Hyderabad. The bilingual dictionary, which has been specially designed for learners of English langauge, teachers, translators and general readers, was unveiled by Mohammad Mahmood Ali, the Deputy Chief Minister of Telangana. Also present at the launch event were Member of Parliament Asaduddin Owaisi, and Dr Mohammad Aslam Parvaiz, Vice Chancellor, Maulana Azad National Urdu University, Hyderabad.

Sivaramakrishnan V, Managing Director, OUP, said, “The English-English-Urdu Dictionary has been translated and edited by empanelled experts of the National Council for Promotion of Urdu Language. The dictionary contains more than 52,000 entries, related phrases, idioms and over 200 illustrations that will provide a comprehensive guide for speakers and learners of Urdu to read, learn, and converse fluently in English.”

The largest book fair of Urdu books, also known as Kul Hind Urdu Kitab Mela organised by the National Council for Promotion of Urdu Language has stalls of some of the top publishers selling Indian and international - spiritual and literary books in Urdu and at Quli Qutubshah Stadium, near High Court. While the response and visitors to book fair is not so satisfactory, the usual rush is expected towards the last few days of the event.

Abdus Samad of the famous MR Publications said, “Every year the response is becoming lesser as the people reading Urdu book is on a decline. However, more publicity of the book fair can also be helpful in drawing crowds.” Among the bestselling books were the translations of Quran in Marathi and Telugu. While most stalls concentrated on the religious and spiritual books, there are a few stalls of publishers like MR Publications who have Urdu literature.

Abdus is proud of the fact that he has not only stocked the best of literature, but also put up the pictures of the authors. One of the highlights of the exhibition is that scholars from across India are visiting it. Mufti Ashraf Ali, Amir-e- Shariat, Karnataka, was found browsing through the books at one of the stalls on Monday.

The book fair has come to Hyderabad after many years and the organisers hope that people will make best use of it. The last date for the Urdu book fair is December 20.
