Police opened fire on a gang of ATM burglars at the Mangaram village of Lingampet mandal in the district on Wednesday when they tried to ransack the ATM centre of State Bank of India in Medak town and escaped into Nizamabad district. The Lingampet Sub-Inspector of Police Palle Rakesh opened one round of fire at the vehicle of the robbery gang while they were fleeing.

Nizamabad: Police opened fire on a gang of ATM burglars at the Mangaram village of Lingampet mandal in the district on Wednesday when they tried to ransack the ATM centre of State Bank of India in Medak town and escaped into Nizamabad district. The Lingampet Sub-Inspector of Police Palle Rakesh opened one round of fire at the vehicle of the robbery gang while they were fleeing.
It may be recalled that on Tuesday, the gang of robbers ransacked two SBI ATM and One India-One ATM at the Varni Mandal Rudru and Kotagiri mandal headquarters and decamped with cash worth Rs 43 lakh . Again, these gangs tried to rob SBI ATM at Autonagar at Medak on Wednesday and tried to break open it with a gas cutter. In the process, ATM machine got burnt and flames started coming out from the machine and currency notes worth Rs 10 lakh were reduced to ashes.
With the sudden eruption of flames, the thieves fled the scene on noticing the police patrolling vehicle. Immediately, the police chased the robbers in their vehicle, but they could successfully escape from the spot and again entered into the Nizamabad district. The Medak police informed the Nagireddipet police of Nizamabad district.
The Nagireddipet Police tried to chase and catch the Bolero vehicle but they speedily fled away towards the Lingampet side. Immediately, the Nagireddipet Sub-Inspector of Police alerted the Lingampet Sub-Inspector of Police Palle Rakesh. He got into the act to catch them and parked the police patrolling vehicle across on the road at Mongaram to stop the car of the gang. But when they tried to escape without stopping, the Sub-Inspector of Police opened fire at them and made a vain attempt to catch them.
Nizamabad Range DIG Naveen Chand, Nizamabad Superintendent of Police Chandrashekhar Reddy, Kamareddy DSP Bhaskar and other police officers rushed to the spot to get details from Sub-Inspector of Police Rakesh. Later, Deputy Inspector of Police G Naveen Chand and the SP visited the burgled ATMs at Rudru and Kotagiri.
Later, speaking to the media Naveen Chand said that these robbers hailed from Maharashtra and they were taking shelter at Gandhari forest area of Nizamabad district. The police were searching for them. According to sources, the police arrested three gang members till now and were conducting an enquiry. Within another day or two, the police would arrest the remaining thieves. But the police were yet to be confirm the arrests.
