Karimnagar: The Labour department has decided to organise a meeting along with the owners of brick kiln units, NGOs’ representatives and labour union leaders at Balaji garden, Mankammathota here on Saturday.

District Collector Neetu Kumari Prasad, Superintendent of Police D Joel Davis, District Legal Services Authority Secretary and others will participate in the meeting which is aimed to create awareness about the conditions of migrant labourers.

The district administration’s decision got significance in the wake of the growing anguish among various quarters over the attacks on the workers by the owners of brick manufacturing units.
Owners of the brick manufacturing units giving heinous punishments to the labourers, who migrate from Odisha, Chhattisgarh and Bihar states, has become a routine.
But the alleged murder of a four-month old pregnant worker, Surjo Bagh has brought the migrant labourers’ problems into limelight. According to labour laws, owners should provide shelter, toilets, drinking water, schools for children and other facilities but in fact there were no such facilities were provided in these units.
The labour, revenue and police departments are forgetting their responsibility to ensure that all these facilities would be provided to the workers and remaining as mute spectators.
