Festive spirit descends on city

Festive spirit in the city reached a fever pitch on Tuesday as denizens ventured out to buy last-minute gifts and Christmas merchandise. The demand for cakes, wines, candles, trees, lights, stars and Santa Claus masks is most high and now is the time to bring out tree decors and start hanging mistletoes.

Apart from giving people every reason just to start shopping again, this festive season also just got stylish and trendier. Like every festival, denizens are set to make this Christmas even more memorable.

Stores in the city give them perhaps more reasons to have a glittery Christmas. With sales on the rise and also the number of people celebrating Christmas in the city, store managers are definitely having a gala time.

When it comes to Christmas decorations, the Christmas tree is king. It's the centerpiece, a focus of attention in any room. Coming in various sizes and varieties, retailers in the city are busy stocking up with the latest. Varieties of Christmas trees such as pine trees, deluxe trees, ordinary tree, white trees and fiber optic trees are available. And they come in different sizes, ranging from four- to eight-feet tall trees.

Christmas trees being sold at the store start off from a height of three feet to 10 ft and fall in the price range of Rs 10,000- Rs 15,000. The sales go on gradually. For the last three days, on an average, we have sold about 10 trees every day and this will increase as we near the festival,” said Samuel Raj, retailer at Besant Road.

Agreeing to it, Esther Rani, a school teacher, says, “It’s the only festival every year, so people do not mind spending on decorative stuff. At my house, we put up a Christmas tree two weeks ahead and we keep adding more decorations to it every week. It just feels really nice to maintain festive spirit at home. This year, we bought reets, hangings and other decorative articles to fill the house with color,” she said.
