In a bid to create awareness among the students about the contributions made by the renowned mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan, schools and colleges across the city celebrated National Mathematics Day on Tuesday.

Students at SDMS Siddhartha Mahila Kalasala organised a seminar on Srinivasa Ramanujan’s Contribution in Mathematics. Dr A Anjaneyulu, Professor and Director of MCA, VSR&NVR College, Tenali participated. Speaking on the occasion, he underlined the importance of getting the fundamentals right and applying simple calculation techniques in day-to-day life. He said that Ramanujan’s interest in the subject saw him solve problems and also correspond with GH Hardy, who went on to collaborate with the Indian genius. Ramanujan independently compiled 3,900 results as identities and equations in his rather short life, he said.

Later, students performed a fabulous dance show on Magic Square and educated the students about the principals of Ramanujan mathematics. NIT, Eluru Prof Y Sarala, College HOD Mathematics S Sudha Vani, principal Dr T Vijaylakshmi and other faculty members were also present.

Meanwhile, PB Siddhartha College of Arts and Science also observed the National Mathematics Day at its campus on a grand note. JNTU, Hyderabad, Prof V Srinivas Kumar, spoke on the importance of Number Theory in the present day mathematics. He said that yet today ATM machines functioning are depended on the cryptography principle.

The College also engaged students by conducting paper presentation, math quiz, math sketching and a few other events, which saw the participation of 250 students.
