It is surprising that Hyderabad with a population of approximately four million and with about 20,000 hotels has only four food inspectors under the jurisdiction of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC). The Corporation, which is supposed to have at least 30 food inspectors, has been working with less than minimal officials for the last one and a half years.

“It is very difficult to operate with just four officials,” said a food inspector of GHMC. Due to the lack of the requisite number, the GHMC has been unable to keep an eye on eating joints and hotels in the city.

The officials at the Corporation say that big hotels maintain good standards but, the problem is with the medium and small sized hotels, which do not follow the prescribed rules and norms.

“It is a Herculean task for us to check each and everything food joint. However, we randomly pick up eateries to check quality,” an official of GHMC revealed.

This is the scenario for registered hotels. However, officials explained that the unregistered eateries could be thousands. Now, the GHMC wants all the unregistered hotels and food joints to register with it by February. In addition, the department has warned that stringent action will be initiated against the management if they fail to register.

“Registration is a must for all eateries. But, small Chinese food centres, pani puri sellers shift their places whenever they require. In such cases, it becomes difficult to check the food quality,” a food Inspector said.

The rising concern towards quality of food and the acute shortage of staff seems to have woken up the Corporation from slumber; it will be going in for recruitment. “Soon, the GHMC will hire around 26 inspectors in the department,” an official said.
