Hyderabad: President Pranab Mukherjee called upon economists of the country to focus not only on education, but also employability for youth with skill development. They should be able to sustain in domestic soil and become successful entrepreneurs, he said.

He was addressing the inaugural session of 3-day 98th annual conference of the Indian Economic Association (IEA) which was organised in coordination with the Centre for Economic and Social Studies (CESS) at Prof Jayashankar Telangana State Agricultural University on Sunday. Stressing on the skill development, he felt that the prescription ‘one size fits all’ would work no longer. “Skill development is directly related to employment prospects of our youth and, therefore, the focus has to be on providing quality education with skill development,” he emphasised.

Reminding of more than 1,000-year-old history, he recalled that India was the frontrunner in education and universities like Takshila and Nalanda, which were centres of higher learning for students from India and neighbouring countries. At present, the country has over 700 universities including 44 Central universities and around 36,000 colleges. He lamented that until recently, the country did not have a single university figuring in the global top 200. “It is only now, after concerted efforts and policy interventions that two of our institutions – Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, and IIT-Delhi have got into the top 200 global institutions in September this year,” the President noted.

Lauding the efforts of economists during economic crises of the last decade, he said that India attained economic liberation, while world economy was going through crisis. Governor E S L Narasimhan, Deputy Chief Minister Md Mahmood Ali, Prof Kaushik Basu, conference president, IEA & Chief Economist, World Bank, Prof Sukhadeo Thorat, president, IEA & Chairman, ICSSR, Prof C H Hanumantha Rao, former member, Planning Commission & founder member, CESS and several others were present.
