Poor maintenance by GHMC leaves area in ‘stench’

Poor sewerage network, encroachments and mosquito menace have been ruling the roost in all 13 divisions of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation’s (GHMC) LB Nagar Assembly constituency.

The 13 divisions in LB Nagar Assembly Constituency includes Nagole (division 11) with 53,751 voters, Mansoorabad (division 12) with 47,045 voters, Hayathnagar (division 13) with 47,973 voters, BN Reddy Nagar (division 14) with 45,611 voters, Vanasthalipuram (division 15) with 49,000 voters, Hasthinapuram (division 16) with 44, 961 voters, Champapet (division 17) with 49,286 voters, Lingojiguda (division 18) with 49,286 voters, Saroornagar (division 19) with 64,687 voters, Ramakrishnapuram (division 20) with 56,378 voters, Kothapet (division 21) with 55,636 voters, Chaitanyapuri (division 22) with 44,509 voters and Gaddianaram (division 23) with 54,926 voters.

Poor maintenance of nalas

The nala passing from Sushma Theatre in Vanasthalipuram to Ayyappa Nagar in Nagole has been incomplete for several years and the erstwhile Corporators, along with GHMC, have turned a blind eye to the issue. The nala, which passes through three divisions including Vanasatalipuram, Manosoorabad and Nagole, has been a major carrier of sewer water and mosquito breeding site. The result of which is that colonies like Saraswathi Nagar, Madhura Nagar and other adjoining areas have been suffering from foul smell emanating from the nala.

"We are the worst sufferers for GHMC's improper maintenance of the nala. Due to careless attitude of GHMC officials and ex-Corporators, the water from storm water drain has been mixing with drainage water and emanating foul smell," said Ravi Kumar, a resident of Madhura Nagar.

"We took the issue to the civic body but they neither repaired the nala nor conducted fogging," informed Ravi. In addition, the nala from Vanasthalipuram to Nandana Vanam in BN Reddy Nagar has been in a pathetic condition.

“The residents in the stretch have been forced to use the contaminated water for their daily needs,” said Kishore, a resident of Shatavahana Nagar.

Besides this, areas like Central Bank Colony, Maruthi Nagar and adjoining areas nearby Pedda Cheruvu have been forced to bear similar consequences.

 Bad roads

Roads encroached

The roads in Venkateshwara Nagar Colony in Hasthinapuram division have allegedly been encroached by local leaders. Beside this, roads in Suryodaya Colony, Chitraseema Colony, Sai Ram Nagar Champapet and others in all 13 divisions are also encroached.

"Even though several complaints were given to the GHMC town planning, no action has been taken on the encroachers and in return the department slapped notices to nearby residents of encroachers,” said Anjaiah, a High Court colony resident.

No basic civic amenities

"We have been paying more tax to the GHMC and other departments when compared to the posh areas like Banjara Hills but, still the Government has failed to provide basic amenities like streetlights, roads, sewerage network and drinking water facilities," said Kalyan, Gowthami Nagar resident in Lingojiguda division.

Water scarcity a prime problem

Many areas in all 13 divisions specifically Srinivasapuram colony and RTC colony in Vanasthalipuram, which have been lying in upward region, have been facing severe water crises. Households in the region have been receiving water at low pressure and not for more than an hour.

"Water supply is just once a week and we have been forced to depend on tankers to meet our daily requirement," said Satya Eshwari, Raji Reddy Nagar resident.

Chain snatching, an addition to existing woes

Chain snatching has become a main problem in every division of the LB Nagar constituency.

"Fearing chain snatchers, we have requested the police department to deploy security during nights in all 13 divisions of the Constituency. Reacting on our request, they have provided security in some areas but, we request them to increase it to all 13 divisions in the constituency," said Sumalatha, Sahara Colony resident.

“Since many areas are located in the outskirts of the city we request the police department to concentrate more on all 13 divisions,” she added.

When questioned ex-Corporators about the long pending issues in their respective constituencies none of them are ready to comment on the matter. In addition, they said that they are not contesting the ensuing GHMC election.
