He said the efforts of the district police to control the extremists’ activities in the district were become a big success and also the public response was more than expected to the programmes organised by the cops in Maoist-infested areas.
Developmental activities in the extremist-infested areas picked up momentum with the people avoiding Maoists, he added. Two Maoists, including Eturunagaram-Mahadevpur area deputy commander Katrevula Lingaiah alias Mallesh and Gadchiroli district of Maharastra area committee secretary Burra Baghya were surrendered before the police.
A resident of Rapellikota of Mahadevpur mandal, Lingaiah, gave up arms and joined the mainstream on September 10, while Baghya, a native of Husnabad, surrendered due to severe health problems on October 9.
A total of 14 militants and extremist sympathisers were arrested and recovered 698 bullets, 37 explosive material and Rs 16,000 cash from them, the SP briefed.
‘Crime rate on rise’ Compared to previous year, there was a spurt in the crime rate in the district in the present year. A total of 10,956 cases were registered from January to December 25, 2015.
While the attacks on women rose from 1,368 in last year to 1,513, there was 48 percent increase in rapes. This year, 101 rapes were reported as against 68 cases in 2014.
Most of the cases were related to love affairs, said the district Superintendent of Police, D Joel Davis while disclosing the details of the crimes reported in 2015 to the media here on Tuesday.
At the same time, compared to previous year, there was 9 percent increase in road accidents. As against 1,490 cases reported last year, 1,548 road accidents occurred and 610 persons died this year.
About 1.8 lakh cases were registered and an amount of Rs 4.15 crore was collected related to violation of traffic rules.
Answering to a query that police have failed to arrest senior cops, who helped and invested money in ASI Mohan Reddy’s illegal finance, the SP said CID was investigating the case and all the 38 cases that were registered at different police station have been transferred to the CID, which is probing the case from all angles.
