Mahbubnagar: Though the famous Kaverammapeta Shandi (weekly market) in Jadcherla mandal is a huge hit among the public, on the flip side, it is fast becoming a breeding ground for various diseases. Particularly, the dust and dirt that originate from the market place during the weekly fair on Saturday are causing respiratory diseases, according to environmental experts.

Not just this, freely roaming pigs and stray dogs and overflowing nalas all along the market street are spreading diseases like diarrhoea, asthma and cough and cold problems to the customers. Kaverammapeta Shandi, also called as ‘Santha’, is famous among the locals in and around Jadcherla, Badepally, and hundreds of villages across Jadcherla Major Gram Panchayat.

Despite being famous for centuries as a leading market place, the sad thing is, the local politicians have not taken a single initiative to develop the famous market place in the district. Every Saturday, thousands of people throng the Kaverammapeta weekly market to buy and sell vegetables, utensils, day-to-day house hold items, agriculture equipments and animals like cows, bulls and buffalos.

Of late, the farmers have also been selling goats and sheep at the famous weekly market. But, to every body’s surprise, facility has been provided neither to the sellers nor the buyers at the market place. People across various villages surrounding Jadcherla come here to buy vegetables. Vegetables and other spices like chillies, garlic, ginger etc are available at reasonable rates compared to the actual market rates.

However, the conditions at the ‘Santha’ are totally unhygienic. “We came here to buy vegetables. All vendors are selling their vegetables in unhygienic conditions. The filthy smell from the nearby nala is making the area sick. Moreover there are no streetlights installed. Though it is a famous place, the leaders here have not taken a single measure to develop the place,” said a local customer from Housing Board Colony who came here to buy vegetables.
According to doctors, rising dust is the major cause of asthematic disease. Moreover, pigs, stray dogs, misquotes and flies spread other diseases like diarrhoea, brain fever, swine flu and common cold and fever. “I came here to buy vegetables but the dust caused me difficulty in breathing and I have fallen ill due to dust allergy and have been suffering from fever for the past three days,” said Chittemma, a housewife who regularly visits the shandy.
In view of growing unhygienic conditions at the Kaverammapeta weekly market, the people are demanding the leaders to install basic amenities like construction of cement roads, erection of sheds for vendors, proper platforms for sellers, parking place for vehicles, construction of underground drainages etc.
“This market is famous for about 100 years now. But till date there are no proper streetlights, no roads and no drinking water facility for the customers. Every week, thousands of animals are brought to this market and many farmers from surrounding villages come here for buying agriculture equipments, but the leaders have not taken a single measure to develop this market,” said Basha Nayak, an animal seller from Peddagutta Thanda.
