Hyderabad: Over 25 per cent of e-challans issued by the Cyberabad traffic police to the violators of Motor Vehicles Act have returned to their point of origin.
It is suspected that the vehicle owners could have furnished false addresses and managed to get the vehicles registered. It was also possible that some of the motorists could be tagging fictitious registration numbers to the vehicle number plates.
With the implementation of “integrated e-Challan system” in both Hyderabad and Cyberabad, the Cyberabad police were able to impose penalties on over 5 lakh violators in 2015. But, the failure to penalise 25% of the violators dampened the spirit of the police.
In 2015, the Cyberabad police booked a total of 13, 40,651 cases against motorists through “contact and non-contact enforcement.” Through the “integrated e-challan system as many as 6,59,472 were issued to the motorists. But over 1.8 lakh e-challans were returned to the office of the Cyberabad Police Commissionerate as the addressees were not found.
The e-challans that could not be delivered to violators were worth Rs 10 crore. Four special teams were formed now to trace the eluding motorists. Traffic DCP Avinash Mohanty has been entrusted with the responsibility to lead the special teams.
Mohanty expressed his concern over some vehicle owners evading penalties by either tagging fictitious registration number to the number plates or furnishing wrong addresses at the time of registration of their vehicles. He said “The number of such vehicles could be even more.
We have already formed four teams to trace these vehicles. If they are identified on roads, they will be detained and further action will be initiated legally in coordination with the Transport officials.”
