Hyderabad: Telangana State Election Commission (TSEC) is going to issue election notification soon for the 3rd general elections to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) which is scheduled to be held this month, according to Election Commission Secretary M Ashok Kumar.
The GHMC comprises of more than 70 lakh voters and makes up nearly 1/3rd of the population of Telangana State. It houses most of the industrial and commercial establishments of the State with a revenue contribution of about Rs 1 lakh crore to the State and Central governments besides providing employment to lakhs of people from all over the country, according to an official release issued here on Sunday.
The annual budget of the GHMC is approximately Rs 6,300 crore. The city can be quickly transformed into a real world class metropolis, enhancing the lifestyle and prosperity of its residents, provided there is a competent and capable elected body managing it. A responsible and accountable city administration can be obtained only with the active participation of voters in the election process.
A traditional voting percentage of 30-40 can only obtain a traditional leadership, according to Ashok Kumar. He appealed to all people-friendly organisations to play their due role in increasing voter awareness and voter empowerment leading to higher voter turnout during the ensuing elections by:
The status of voter registration can be checked online in the web portal of TSEC (tsec.gov.in) and CEO, Telangana (ceotelangana.nic.in). In case if the name of a person, ordinary resident in the GHMC area is not found in the rolls, then the same can be registered by filing the claim before the Assembly Electoral Registration Officers either physically or in online mode in the web portal of the CEO, Telangana.
Only the voters whose names are registered in the ward-wise electoral rolls of the GHMC or Assembly constituency rolls as on date of GHMC election notification can vote in the GHMC elections. In order to create awareness among stakeholders to increase the voter turnout, they can run campaigns within their organisations and also in the society on their own (or) in coordination with other civil society organisations that are already involved in the job.
Most of the voters in urban areas do not know their polling station number, polling station location and serial number in the voters list. To overcome this, the TSEC developed the web portal tsec.gov.in where the citizens can search their names and take printout of voters slip containing their name, serial number in the voters list of polling station, the details of name and location of the polling station.
