Neglected and unattended issues in the Nampally Assembly Constituency will play a significant role in the coming Greater Hyderabad Municipal Elections (GHMC) election. Majority of the residents are found to be aggrieved over the services of the ex-Corporators who did not attend to their grievances.

While problems persist in the constituency, local Corporators are clueless about the issues and claim that the divisions are grievance-free, particularly the Mallepally and Red Hills divisions

Voters’ profile
The constituency has upto 2.61 lakh voters in six divisions viz. Mehdipatnam with 34,785 voters, Asif Nagar with 38,486 voters, Vijay Nagar Colony with 32, 092 voters, Ahmed Nagar with 33,342 voters, Red Hills with 31,126 voters and Mallepally with 32,559 voters

Neglected and unattended issues in the Nampally Assembly Constituency will play a significant role in the coming Greater Hyderabad Municipal Elections (GHMC) election. Majority of the residents are found to be aggrieved over the services of the ex-Corporators who did not attend to their grievances.

The constituency covers Mallepally and Red Hills areas which are considered as grievances free colonies in the GHMC list. The Corporation claims 100 per cent grievance redressal for the colonies in these areas. However, the situation in the other areas is in contrast where the locals are suffering from several civic issues from a long time.

When Hans contacted the local ex-Corporators to talk on the issues, many of them were found clueless about public grievances and did not responded properly. The ex-Corporator of Mehdipatnam, Asif Nagar and Vijay Nagar Colony refused to comment. Whereas ex-Corporators of Ahmed Nagar and Red Hills were not even available to be reached.

No development in Mangar Basthi Despite fine and speed development activities in Mallepally slums, Mangar Basthi remains in worse condition. Locals claim that no development activity has taken place in the area. The civic facilities in the basthi like roads, electricity, water supply and sewage system are in horrific condition. An automobile dealer and local, on condition of anonymity said that illiteracy in the basthi is the major issue. “Many youths are unemployed and indulge in antisocial activities,” he said.

Although, the government has established a primary government school but, due to poor functioning the school has not been opened from a long time. The ex-Corporator said that he had tried to civilise the basthi and bring education and employment related schemes but, due to lack of cooperation from the people, he was not able to do good for them.

No specific vending point With no specific vending point in Mehdipatnam all the footpaths on the main roads are occupied by the roadside hawkers.
A senior citizen and retired government employee from Ayodhya Nagar in Mehidipatnam, K Vishwanath said that there are no places for pedestrians as hawkers have occupied the footpaths. “Pedestrians are forced to walk on the roads,” he said.

A similar situation is present in many areas of the division. The Corporation has specified vending points in areas based on public requests. However, locals informed that though they made several attempts to resettle the hawkers with the help of Corporation, nothing has materialised yet.
Dangling wires

Electricity and cable wires are dangling in many areas, which are creating a lot of trouble to the locals. Colonies of Feelkhana, Sitaram Bagh, Venkatadri colony and Asif Nagar have been found to have the issue in large numbers. A local from Sitaram Bagh, Suman Roy said that the electricity poles are very short. “The residents have already requested to take an action on the private cable but, the Corporation has ignored our pleas,” he said.

Historic temple in bad shape The Sitaram Temple, which is more than a hundred years old, is left unattended. Frequent visitors of the temple said that they have not seen any development and renovation activities there. A frequent visitor and devotee, Jitendra said, “There is not even an approach road here.”

However, the ex-Corporator of the area was found to be clueless about the problem and said that he has not received any complaints so far from the public in this regard. Apart from the major issues the locals have been suffering with water scarcity, poor sanitation and road issues. In many parts of the division, especially in slum areas, the civic authority has kept a blind eye in providing adequate basic facilities.
