Adding to the Sankranti celebrations, a Kuchipudi dance recital took place at the Jagannath Temple, organised by Natya Swara and presented by the Kalinga Cultural Trust recently. Himabindu Kanoj and her troupe regaled the audience with an elegant presentation.

The opening item was “Gajananayutam Ganeshwaram” by Dikshitar, in Vegavahini raagam. The song describes lord Ganesha being worshipped by Indra and Brahma. The artiste Himabindu and three of her students gave an energetic recital.

Another piece, “Namaramayanam” that depicts the whole story of the Ramayana in 108 lines was also performed. Guru Himabindu and her students beautifully conveyed this devotion-imbued item with total conviction. Set in Raagamalika, each kanda was interspersed with swaras.

In chitaranjani, “Nada Tanumanisham” by Saint Thyagaraja is a keerthana on lord Shiva, extolling him as the embodiment of music. An Attana Jatiswaram, pure nritta by three students followed. “Krishna Shatakam” by Adi Sankaracharya, exquisitely choreographed by Guru Badrinath was a wonderful treat rendered by Himabindu.

Beginning with melodious lyrics, the fast-paced piece describing lord Krishna's myriad forms was vibrantly done. Brindavana Saranga Thillana with a mangalam concluded the programme. The other artistes were Spriha, Vyshnavi, Srivalli, Meghana, Sona and Maanyasri.
