In a first-of-its-kind surgery, KIMS Hospitals in Secunderabad performed Laporoscopic Hepatectomy on a patient suffering from liver cancer. The procedure was performed by a team guided by Liver transplant surgeon Dr Sachin Daga, Consultant Surgical Gastroenterologist and liver Transplant surgeon for Laparoscopic Hepatectomy on the 67-year-old patient, Chandrashekhar from Anantapur.
The minimally invasive surgery was done on the right part of the liver, enabling patient to recover and get discharged in four days
“We were conscious about the incision and the pain happening during the conventional open surgery and also the blood loss. Looking at the patient’s condition, we prioritised it accordingly to go with Laparoscopic Hepatectomy, with minimal blood loss, smaller scar, faster recovery and earlier discharge” - Dr Sachin Daga.

Looking at the patient’s condition, we prioritised it accordingly to go with Laparoscopic Hepatectomy, with minimal blood loss, smaller scar, faster recovery and earlier discharge,” said Dr Sachin Daga.
“This process is hardly preferred still since the challenges involved are technical, requires expert surgeon and delicate handling of structures entering the liver,” he explained, adding that the procedure involved taking the right part of the liver through incision in a surgery span across six hours and 50 minutes.
The other medical condition that spurred KIMS Hospitals to adopt the process was that the tumour was entirely inside the liver making it easy for laparoscopic removal. Speaking on the occasion, Dr B Bhaskar Rao, MD and CEO, KIMS Hospitals, congratulating the team, said, “The Laparoscopic Hepetactomy is yet another breakthrough we have successfully embraced.
We were waiting for the right occasion to harness the procedural excellence and with the problem lying inside the liver; our team went ahead with it.” The patient, Chandrashekar has recovered quickly and was discharged in four days.
