Khammam: Massive swindling of the savings by women members of Self-Help Groups of Khammam district has been reported. It has been alleged that several lakhs of rupees saved by the SHG members were not credited in the bank accounts by their leaders who are called euphemistically ‘Grama Deepikas’. The case in point is the V Venkatayapalem village in Raghnadhapalem mandal where the women were taken aback when they were asked to repay the loan amounts which they have already paid through Grama Deepika of their group.
There are 30 self-help groups under the aegis Jhansi Lakshmi Samakhya in V Venkatayapalem village. The members of all these groups save several lakhs of rupees every month. The Grama Deepikas of the Samakhya supervise the collection of savings and repayment of equated monthly instalments (EMIs). The whole issue came to light when the members of various groups and the Bank officials lodged complaints with the officials of the Indira Kranti Patham stating that the amounts pertaining to various groups were not credited in their accounts during the last two years.
So is the case of other groups like Aruna Sangham, Rajiv Gandhi Sangham, Shravani Sangham, Triveni Sangham and others in the mandal. Since most of the women members of these groups are illiterate, the Grama Deepikas are ruling the roost and calling the shots. Vijaya of Gulabi group told The Hans India there was no response from the Grama Deepikas, resource persons or the Bank officials when the women complain of misappropriation of their money.
Banoth Kumar of Jyoti group said that Grama Deepikas are collecting Rs 100 every month for updating the accounts of each SHG and are even demanding commission when the loans were sanctioned. The district collector after receiving numerous complaints of misappropriation amounting to more than Rs one crore ordered a thorough investigation into the issue. Nirmala, officer of Indira Kranti Patham at Raghunadhapalem said that there would be a thorough enquiry and the guilty would not be spared.
