Hyderabad: The University of Hyderabad on Thursday lifted the suspension on four Dalit students, four days after the suicide by one of their fellow scholars Rohith Vemula which sparked outrage across the nation and led to a political slugfest between the government and the opposition.

The termination order, however, comes with a rider stating that its decision was subjected to outcome of the High Court verdict where the case was pending. The emergency meeting of the council after taking into account the extraordinary situation prevailing in the university, and after discussing the issue in detail, resolved to terminate the punishment imposed on the students concerned with immediate effect, a statement by the university said.

Following the decision, Vice-Chancellor Podile Appa Rao asked the Ambedkar Students’ Association -- spearheading an agitation seeking his resignation -- to resume classes and maintain calm and harmony “under the extraordinary circumstances prevailing on the campus”. He urged all in the university to contribute to resume regular class work, research activities and administrative work without further delay.

However, this decision of the EC was out-rightly rejected by the Joint Action Committee for Social Justice. “ We out-rightly reject this illegitimate circular since it came through a committee headed by Prof. Appa Rao who in our opinion is not the legitimate VC anymore but in fact a criminal on the run.

Instead of conducting meeting and passing objectionable resolutions he should immediately surrender to the Police,” the JAC said. Further, the JAC said the entire episode of inquiry was fabricated and implemented under the pressure from the BJP, Ministry of Human Resource Development and university administration which led to the suspension, social boycott and eventually the death of Vemula Rohith.

The JAC questioned why the Telangana police did not arrest Union Minister Bandaru Dattatreya, Prof. Appa Rao, BJP MLC N Ramchander Rao, Prof. Alok Pandey and ABVP President Susheel Kumar on whom case was book under the SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act and Abetment to suicide.

The JAC lambasted VC for not visiting the students who were on an indefinite hunger strike. “The VC is willfully putting students’ life in danger. He never met the socially boycotted students, did not come to see Rohith even after his death and is not coming when seven students of the university are on indefinite hunger strike,” the JAC said.

The students condemned the statements made by Susheel Kumar stating that it was deliberate attempt of rumour mongering and misrepresentation of facts surrounding Rohith’s death.
