New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday chose Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University at Lucknow as the venue to break his silence at last on the suicide of dalit research scholar Rohith Vemula of the University of Hyderabad.

Reacting to the massive controversy, the Prime Minister said India had lost a young son and he "felt his family's pain." “What his family members must be going through, I do understand. Mother India has lost her son. Politics aside, the fact is that we lost a son.

I can understand the pain," "he said, while addressing the convocation at Lucknow. Earlier, dalit students who tried to disrupt his speech with their slogans demanding justice and decrying intolerance were shown the door by the security.

Modi "chose the time and venue carefully" in picking up the Ambedkar University convocation in UP as he wanted to drive home his point forcefully, it is learnt. It may be recalled that Uttar Pradesh Assembly is going to the polls in 2017.

BSP supremo, Mayawati has sent a party delegation to the University of Hyderabad close on the heels of Congress's Rahul Gandhi to woo the dalit community further.
