Warangal: Censorship will lead to cultural anarchy, noted Tamil feminist writer C S Lakshmi has said. The writer, who is the founder director of Sound and Picture Archives for Research on Women (SPARROW) a non-governmental organisation for documenting and archiving the work of female writers and artists, has strongly objected to attributing political motives to literary works for promoting “selfish agenda.”

She was delivering keynote address at the three-day national conference on “Right to Write: The culture and literary controversies and controversial literature” organised by Kakatiya University Department of English on the campus in Hanamkonda on Friday. The three-day annual conference of Indian Association of Commonwealth Literature and Language Studies (IACLALS) was sponsored by University Grants Commission.

Lakshmi described proscribing books and killing its authors and attacking artistes as “neo-fascism.” “If expressions are to be ensnared in predetermined agenda they cannot spread and remain stagnant,” she said. She said that controversies were a part of Tamil literature. By threatening writers and setting books on fire, some were trying to make literature inert.

The IACLALS chairperson Prof G J V Prasad felt that though it was not a good sign for the literary works to be surrounded by controversies, it would help to keep the process of literature lively. “As the writers have the right to freedom of expression, so is the reader,” he added. The conference convener and the Head of English Department K Damodar Rao gave references of prohibiting classics since ages.

Prof K Purushottam pointed out that the objective of books was to disseminate knowledge and banning the books would stop propagation of wisdom. The IACLALS Rina Ramdev explained the objectives of the association.

The IACLALS vice president Subhendu Mund, Ramdev, the conference coordinator Prof G Damodar, noted writer Amphasayya Naveen, young writer Sharath Komarraju, retied professors N Lakshmana Murthy and M Rajagopalacharya, the KU PRO V Krishnamacharya and others were present.
