Hyderabad: The University of Hyderabad (UoH) on Friday announced Rs 8 lakh ex gratia to the bereaved family of dalit research scholar Vemula Rohith Chakravarti, who committed suicide recently. However, university authorities could not hand over the demand draft for Rs 8 lakh to Rohith’s mother Radhika as she was out of town.

Meanwhile, the Join Action Committee for Social Justice rejected the ex gratia and demanded a compensation of Rs 50 lakh. “Rohith would have got Rs 8 lakh as his fellowship, what’s the purpose of university announcing the same amount.

We will give that amount to Rohith’s family from our fellowships. We are not going to accept the amount announced by the university,” said PhD scholar S Munna. The JAC also demanded the arrest of Vice Chancellor Prof P Appa Rao who has been ‘absconding’ since the incident.

The JAC questioned why the Telangana police failed to act on Union Minister Bandaru Dattatreya, BJP MLC N Ramchander Rao, and UoH ABVP president Susheel Kumar against whom the FIR was registered under the SC/ST Atrocities Act.

The JAC has given a call for ‘Chalo University of Hyderabad’ on January 25. It is expected that students from all the Central and state universities across the country would participate in the programme.
