Hyderabad: Rebel women leaders contesting in the ensuing Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) are crying foul over issuing B forms to family members (wives, sisters and daughters of respective party leaders). This attitude of the parties defeats the real purpose of reserving 50 percent seats to women, they say.

The women leaders claim that the parties have underestimated their calibre, despite them being in frontline politics. The parties have made women empowerment a mantra to woo voters but not to encourage them in the mainstream politics.

The situation is the same in all the parties be it the TRS, the BJP, the TDP, the Congress or the AIMIM. Tickets had been given only to family members of party leaders so that they would act as puppets and act according to the directions of their menfolk, women leaders like Indira Aravinda Jata and Jyotsna Yadav said.

Women had excelled in every field but not politics, they lamented. If women were resisted at the division level politics, then what was women empowerment all about, they questioned. Indira, a BJP rebel candidate from division 85 Adikmet, which was been reserved for women (general), said that she was the frontrunner for Corporator ticket from the BJP and had been active in mainstream politics for many years. She lamented that the ticket had been given to Sai Prasanna, wife of BJP convenor Kondapalli Madhav.

Interestingly, the remaining contestants from all other parties in Adikmet division are wives of either local leaders or ex-corprators. The TRS has issued ticket to Hemalatha Reddy, wife of former corporator Jai Ram Reddy and the TDP has issued ticket to Aruna Kumari Gupta, wife of Sudhakar Gupta.

Where is women empowerment, when the tickets are issued to the family members of local party leaders or former Corporators, Indira questioned. “Women politicians from every party have been meted out injustice and I am one among the few who have been fighting against it,” she said.

The BJP rebel candidate stressed that she was not fighting against the party but for women. Indira said she had embarked on a mission to fight the male hierarchy in politics even at the division level. Indira added that she would contest the ensuing GHMC election as an independent candidate to give hope to women to come out and contest the next election.
