Hyderabad: Leader of Opposition in Legislative Council Mohammed Ali Shabbir has accused former Mayor Mohammed Majid Hussain for "disowning" one of his daughters only to contest in the GHMC elections on MIM ticket from Mehdipatnam ward.

Shabbir Ali, along with Congress candidate Mohammed Khaliq Irfan, on Saturday undertook door-to-door canvassing. They were on a whistle-stop election campaign and addressed meetings at several places in Mehdipatnam ward.

Addressing a meeting at Zeba Bagh, Shabbir Ali said it was highly regrettable that the former mayor had abdicated his responsibility towards one of his daughters only to contest in the elections. The action on the part of Majid Hussain was not only against Constitution but also against tenets of Islam.

He said Islam and Prophet Mohammed had strictly warned Muslims against disowning their own
children. "He had served as GHMC Mayor for almost three years. He should have set an example by refusing to contest the election. The birth certificates clearly showed that Majid Hussain and Syeda Juveria Azamath have three children, he added.

The Congress leader also listed out the failures of MIM in ensuring upliftment of Muslims. He said that the MIM leaders had become rich, but their voters remained poor and downtrodden. He said none of the areas represented by the MIM Corporators had proper basic amenities. You must reject everyone who were seeking vote in the name of religion.

Shabbir Ali also claimed that the previous Congress regime had developed Hyderabad by spending over Rs. 1 lakh crore. But, the pace of development came to a halt after TRS came to power. He also took a dig at TRS manifesto wherein minorities were promised 1,000 auto-rickshaws.

"The Congress party provided 4 per cent reservation and turned poor Muslim youth into engineers, doctors and qualified professionals. But TRS government wanted the Muslims to become auto drivers," he said adding that the community would agree for nothing less than 12 per cent Muslim reservation which was promised by Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao in 2014 election manifesto.
