Hyderabad: Five-year-long wait for what is being claimed as country’s largest ‘Science City’ comes to an end with the State and Central governments releasing funds for taking up the project which houses NexGen Imax-9D technology, energy park, planetarium and many other permanent scientific exhibitions.

The Science City will come up on a sprawling 85-acre area in Rajendranagar mandal under the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation limits. The Centre has sanctioned Rs 66 crore and the TS government released Rs 110 crore for the Rs 176-crore project, which is aimed to promote scientific temper among students and general public as well.

The other facilities that would be made available in the Science City include a planetarium and interactive multimedia facilities on solar power and expositions related to earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, breaking of glaciers and global warming.

The Science City is being promoted by Telangana State Council of Science and Technology, (TSCOST) which proposes to present the growth of science and technology and their applications in industry and human welfare.

Several reputed science and research organizations, including Creative Museum Designers, the consultancy wing of the National Council for Science Museums and other national and international agencies will be roped in to finalise the designs for the Science City, official sources told The Hans India.

A team of officials from the TSCOST already visited Jalandhar in Punjab, Mussorie, Kolkata and Ahmedabad to study science cities there. Minister for Forests, Environment and Science & Technology J Ramana said the establishment of the Science City was part of promotion of science across the country in State capitals and major cities with a population of not less than 50 lakh.
