Toopran: Ruchitha, a little schoolgirl from Venkatayapalli village in Veldurthi mandal of Medak district, is the first person from Telangana to receive the ‘Geetha Chopra’ National Gallantry Award for bravery.

With presence of mind and sensing danger, she reacted quickly to save two classmates in the train-bus accident in which 16 persons were killed at Masaipet while the school bus was crossing the railway gate on July 24, 2014. Ruchitha saw the approaching train and alerted the driver, who recklessly neglected her warning.

She pushed out her classmates Mahipal Reddy and Sadashiv from the bus window before jumping herself from the bus. Along with her younger brother Varun, she survived the mishap, but she lost younger sister Sruthi in the accident.

Ruchitha’s brave act enabled her to receive the award from the Telangana State government on November 14 in Hyderabad. Following the government’s recommendation, she was selected for the Geetha Chopra Award.

Speaking to The Hans India, her parents, Malla Goud and Lata, said her bravery had made them proud. “This award makes us feel that our lost child has come alive,” they remarked while remembering their child.
