Call for Chalo UoH today

Hyderabad: University of Hyderabad (UoH) Vice Chancellor Prof P Appa Rao on Sunday went on an indefinite leave amidst furore over suicide of research scholar Rohith Vemula.

This development comes as the Joint Action Committee for Social Justice-UoH has called for ‘Chalo UoH’ on Monday demanding justice for dalit research scholar, who committed suicide due to expulsion from the university hostel and ‘social boycott’ by the administration.

According to the statement put up by the Registrar’s Office on the university official website, the Vice Chancellor will be on leave. In the absence of the Vice Chancellor, Dr Vipin Srivastava, the seniormost Professor shall perform the duties of the Vice Chancellor from January 24 (FN).

“There is no pressure from anybody. It is my concern for my university. We want to resolve the issue now. There is an impasse now and to break that impasse, we need to have some mechanism where I am advised to be little away from the campus and somebody has to be there to be in command.

We have a provision to ask a senior Professor to be in charge and that’s what we have done,” said Appa Rao. This move by Rao was staunchly condemned by the students, JAC and the teacher community in the university. “We do not want murderer as VC, we want a VC who is from an academic background. He has to step down immediately,” said S Munna, member of the JAC.

The SC, ST Faculty and Officers’ Forum said that they were shocked and dismayed at Prof Vipin Srivastava assuming the office of the Vice Chancellor. The forum said Prof Srivastava was accused in the suicide of dalit student Senthil in 2008. “We strongly condemn his appointment as in charge VC.

How can such a person be appointed has in charge VC,” said Prof V Krishna, member of the SC, ST Faculty Forum. Another reason for opposition to Prof Srivastava as in charge VC is he was chairman of the Executive Council Sub-Committee that took decision to expel and ‘social boycott’ five dalit research scholars.

However, Prof Srivastava said he would have a dialogue with the agitating students to get back normalcy on the campus in a couple of days. The JAC appealed to the Telangana government that they would hold the protest peacefully and urged the government to allow students from other universities into UoH.

The university on Sunday issued orders withdrawing punishment given to the four dalit research scholars. However, the withdrawal is subject to the High Court’s verdict.
