Rohith’s suicide at UoH

Hyderabad: The Joint Action Committee for Social Justice (JAC) on Monday called for all-India universities bandh on January 27 over the suicide of dalit research scholar Rohith Vemula at the University of Hyderabad.

The JAC after consulting JACs of several Central and state universities has given a call for the bandh. It was also decided to form a national JAC to carry forward the protest demanding justice for Rohith, who committed suicide after expulsion and ‘social boycott’ by the university administration. Further to intensify the protest, the JAC intends to hold protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi.

The demands of the JAC include the removal of university Vice Chancellor Prof Appa Rao who, they allege, was responsible for the suicide. The JAC also wants the government to enact ‘Rohith Act’ to prevent suicide of SC, ST, BC and minority students in the universities across the country. Meanwhile, the JAC has decided to keep away from the Republic Day celebrations on the campus.

The JAC has planned to hold talks with filmmaker of Muzaffarnagar Baaqi Hai Nakul Singh. It may be mentioned here that the screening of this movie has originally created differences among the Ambedkar Students Association (ASA) and ABVP that ultimately led to the expulsion of five students belonging to ASA.
