Melbourne: On a day when Indians had a fabulous outing that was made more memorable after Sania Mirza was named for the country’s third highest civilian award, the biggest cheer at Australian Open came from Telangana State teenager, Pranjala Yadlapalli.

Proving that she was the best bet as Sania’s successor, Pranjala took a giant career leap when as the tenth seed she fought-off a tough set against Austrian Mira Antonitsch to enter the third round of the girl’s singles in the junior category on Monday. Pranjala, who recorded a 7-6(5), 6-3 win on Court 7 next faces Russian eighth seed Anastasia Potapova.

Later, she and Karman Thande seeded fifth, defeated local pair of Petra Hule and Selina Turulja 6-4, 6-3 on Court 8 to enter the second round of the girl’s doubles. Meanwhile, Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna earned contrasting victories to sail through to the quarter-finals of their respective categories.

Sania and Martina Hingis earned their 33rd straight win to enter the last eight of women's doubles by easily moving past Svetlana Kuznetsova and Roberta Vinci 6-1, 6-3 at the Margaret Court Arena in an hour and 21 minutes.

A little while earlier, Bopanna, partnering Chinese Taipei's Yung-Jan Chan, beat the Czech-Polish combine of Andrea Hlavackova and Lukasz Kubot in the mixed doubles second round with a second round 4-6, 6-3, 10-6 verdict on Show Court 3.
