Hyderabad: Thirteen Telugus bagged the prestigious Padma awards this year from the two Telugu States. Media baron, film producer and businessman Ramoji Rao bagged this year's prestigious Padma Vibhushan award.

He heads Ramoji Group, which owns the world's largest film production facility, Ramoji Film City, film production company and Eenadu newspaper. Dr D Nageshwar Reddy, Chairman of Asian Institute of Gastroenterology,

Hyderabad, and the President of World Endoscopy Organisation, has been awarded Padma Bhushan. Dr Reddy is recognised as one of the leading experts in the world in the field of gastrointestinal endoscopy. He has published nearly 400 research papers and has written several textbooks.

Dr Yarlagadda Lakshmi Prasad, who is also been awarded Padma Bhushan, apart from working as teacher in Andhra University Hindi department, made efforts for translating acclaimed literary works of Hindi and Telugu, the largest spoken languages of India into each other apart from writing several original works. Dr Prasad has several distinctions to his credit.

Having written 62 books in Telugu and Hindi, he was felicitated with the prestigious Central Sahitya Academy Awards twice. Sania Mirza, the tennis star who is currently ranked No 1 in women’s double and enjoyed the most sensational run, clinching 9 titles -- including two Grand Slams last year was also awarded Padma Bhusan.

Ace shuttler Saina Nehwal, who is currently ranked No. 1 in the world by the Badminton World Federation, and is the first Indian woman to achieve this feat, has been awarded Padma Bhusan.Alla Venkata Rama Rao, inventor and chemist, known for his pioneering researches in the field of drug technology, has been awarded Padma Bhushan.

Kalal Laxma Goud, painter, printmaker and draughtsman, has been Padma Shri. He works in variety of mediums including etching, gouache, pastel, sculpture, and glass painting. Another recipient of Padma Shri Award is Dr Mannam Gopi Chand, who is specialist in cardio-thoracic surgery. He had also led the team which had performed the Second Heart Transplantation in AP.

Dr Alla Gopal Krishna Gokhale, who is another noted surgeon and has the distinction of performing India’s first heart-kidney combined transplant and performing heart transplant for a 69 year old person (oldest man to undergo heart transplant in India), was awarded Padma Shri. Dr Nayudamma Yarlagadda,

who is another Padma Shri awardee, had hit headlines in the national media when he successfully separated three sets of conjoined twins, the only surgeon to do so in the country, may be in the world. Their separation is a task which can be described as marathon and stupendous.

From the film world, noted film director S S Rajamouli has been given the Padma Shri award. He is one the most successful film directors in Tollywood. Starting from his first venture as a director, ‘Student No. 1’, all his movies have fared well at the box office.

His movies Yamadonga, ‘Magadheera’, ‘Eega’ and now ‘Bahubali’ had become big hits. Among other recipients of Padma Shri are Sunita Krishnan and T V Narayana social workers.
