Hyderabad: A day after his appointment, the University of Hyderabad (UoH) interim Vice-Chancellor on Monday faced calls to step down from students and a section of faculty over his alleged involvement in a 2008 suicide amid raging protests over the death of Dalit scholar Rohit Vemula.

  • The Joint Action Committee for Social Justice, spearheading the agitation, declare its opposition to the appointment of Vipin Srivastava as in-charge Vice Chancellor
  • It refers to his alleged involvement in 2008 suicide of Dalit student Senthil Kumar

The Joint Action Committee (JAC) for Social Justice, spearheading the agitation over the alleged suicide of Rohit, and the SC/ST Faculty Forum rejected the appointment of Vipin Srivastava as in-charge Vice-Chancellor of the university.

Speaking to The Hans India, many faculty members as well as students on condition of anonymity said if the Centre had appointed someone else as the interim Vice Chancellor instead of Prof Vipin Srivastava, it would have helped in easing tension in the University.

They expressed the apprehension that Vipin may influence the outcome of Judicial Commission appointed to probe into the alleged suicide of Rohith. The SC, ST Teachers Forum of the university said there were serious allegations against Vipin over death of Senthil Kumar.

“We emphatically state that we are shocked and dismayed at Vipin assuming the office of VC. He was accused of involvement in the suicide of Dalit student Senthil Kumar in 2008 and was heading the Executive Council Sub-Committee which was responsible for meting out unjustified punishment to the Dalit students, resulting in suicide of Rohith,” the forum added.

Prof Sripathi Ramudu, spokesperson of the SC, ST Teachers Forum, said Vipin can influence the probe into the alleged suicide of Rohith. “We want both in-charge VC and regular VC Prof P Appa Rao to step down from their posts immediately. Only then a fair probe will be possible,” Ramudu added.
