The Republic Day celebrations at schools usually mean a colourful flag hoisting ceremony followed by distribution of sweets to schoolchildren. However, such was not the case for children of Geetanjali Olympiad School in Kukatpally.

Following the flag hoisting ceremony at the premises on Tuesday, schoolchildren took to streets with confidence holding banners and placards with messages like “Life does not have reset button. Drive safe”, “Your mind is the most important tool”, “Wear helmet and save your life” and more.

The children approached commuters who were not wearing helmets and with humble elegance, requested them to return homes and wear one while riding. In addition, they congratulated and encouraged the morale of riders who were seen in helmets.

The areas focused were Vivekananda Nagar and JNTU centre where many people are generally seen riding without a helmet giving excuses like lack of time and hairstyle. It was a day filled with excitement as the commuters received young India with enthusiasm and encouraged them for their explicit endeavour.

In addition, the event also served as an eye- opener for students as statistics about road accidents were discussed much to their awareness. Sailaja the event coordinator, said, “It was also a fulfilling day for the teachers and team of Geetanjali as it gave them a sense of patriotism and fervour.

The students are given such opportunities here to enhance their interpersonal skills and in turn help in endorsing certain values in the people of the colony and road users in the city.” Gayathri, principal of the school, said, “I’m very glad that every year the students come up with different programmes and evolve towards progress. It’s truly a moment of pride grooming young India into a more responsible and civilized one."
