Hyderabad: The Petroleum Ministry has launched the online payment facility in Hyderabad and Pune on a pilot basis over two months ago, and the cities have been chosen probably keeping in mind the IT sector and tech-savvy population but if one were to go by the numbers, the response has been poor.

The three oil marketing companies; Indian Oil, Hindustan Petroleum and Bharat Petroleum that took up the facility of refill booking with online payments with close to 120 distributors in Greater Hyderabad evoked poor response.

On an average each distributor gets just 3-4 online payments. Shoba Singh, HP distributor, Neredmet says, “Out of the 20,000 consumers and 400 bookings a day, online payments account for just about 3-4 a day.” She says that the LPG payments are mostly done by housewives and most of them still prefer to hand over money than make online payments.

The same is the response from most of the distributors across the city. Out of the 28 lakh connections in the Greater Hyderabad limits, there are 15 lakh connections in Rangareddy and 13 lakh in Hyderabad. D Ashok Kumar, president, Greater Hyderabad LPG Distributors Association says, “Out of 40,000 consumers in our agency, about 250 consumers make online payments a month.

It depends on several factors such as educational background, area and economic status of the consumers.” In Cyberabad, it is slightly better as there is a considerable tech-savvy young population. Even the SAHAJ online connection scheme that was launched last year did not evoke much response.

On an average, 1,000 new connections are given in each district and about 30,000-35,000 new connections are added in Telangana State every month but very few people take new connections through online.

M Ingole, Chief Regional Manager of Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) and State-Level coordinator for LPG marketing companies says, “Changing the mindset of people is not that easy. The older generation is still skeptical and believes in physical transactions. But the younger generation is getting used to online payments.”

How to pay online?

  • The facility can be availed at www.mylpg.in which can be accessed in 13 Indian languages.
  • The payment options are available via net banking, credit or
  • debit cards.
  • For net banking customers, an additional Rs 8 would be charged.
  • Customers can book LPG cylinder and pay online 24X7 basis

Poor response

  • Out of every 100 bookings, only 3-4 consumers make payments online
  • Out of 1000 new connections daily across the 10 districts less than one per cent opt for online mode.
  • In areas such as Gachibowli, Nanakramguda, Madhapur,
  • Jubillee Hills the online payments are slightly higher.
