Hyderabad: Following the advice from the Centre, the State government has swung into action to get the ‘smart city’ status for Warangal and Karimnagar in the next two lists that are to be made public in the third and fourth quarters of this year. Upon the instructions from the Union government, the Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MA&UD) department has begun the exercise to revise the proposals that were submitted earlier.

State Chief Secretary Rajiv Sharma and MA&UD officials interacted with the Union Cabinet Secretary PK Sinha in a video conference held here on Friday and had a detailed discussion about the reasons for denying the smart city status to Warangal. After the discussion, the Cabinet Secretary advised the State officials to fine tune the proposal of Warangal and forward it to the Centre immediately.

He also asked them to submit a fresh proposal for Karimnagar along with that of Warangal. He suggested them to forward the fresh proposals by June 30, the deadline for the third list of smart cities. The MA&UD department earlier submitted a proposal to the Centre for AMRIT (Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation) city status for Karimnagar. AMRIT is another major urban development scheme initiated by the Central government.

As to the submitted proposal of Warangal city, it had a layout of Rs 2,300 crore and plans for the development of 100 per cent connectivity in water supply and sewerage systems, a promenade at Bhadrakali temple and an internal road network. The revised proposal would have some more infrastructure development projects, officials said.
