Medaram (Warangal): Special counters to distribute ‘Bangaram’, jaggery offered to deities would not be available for devotees during Sammakka Sarakka Jatara this time. The officials have decided to do away with the system of putting up counters to hand over the jaggery which the devotees call as ‘Bangaram’, religious offering at the jatara.

This is in contrary to Tribal Minister A Chandulal’s recent assertion that efforts would be made to distribute jaggery to all the devotees attending the jatara. But the officials think that it might not be possible practically. The decision is taken to avoid rush during the jatara which is scheduled to take place from Feb 17 to 20.

It is said that during the time of jatara, a minimum of million people would be visiting the place on any given day. “Given the enormity of devotees distribution of prasadam would create stampede like situations. To ensure smooth movement of devotees at Gaddelu, prasadam distribution counters would not be set up,” said Medaram jatara executive officer and endowments deputy commissioner T Ramesh Babu.

Speaking to The Hans India here on Friday, Ramesh Babu said during previous jatara, jaggery distribution counters led to stampede and officials were forced to withdraw it immediately. Similarly this time, ‘Thulabharam’ wherein the devotees offer jaggery equal to their weight to the deities is cancelled at the temple premises, he said.

Explaining the measures taken to ensure free flow of devotees during the jatara, Ramesh Babu said the practice of selling special darshanam tickets and queues is dropped. “By this we would be losing an income of nearly Rs 1 crore. Yet in the larger interest of devotees we are doing this,” he added.

Meanwhile, the renovation works at ‘Gaddelu’ (altar) where the deities would be installed during the jatara are yet to be completed even as a fortnight is left for the jatara to begin in full swing. Covering the floor with granite slabs and installing steel grills are going on at the place.

Referring to the delay in the works, Ramesh Babu said there has been an unprecedented rush of devotees during the past two months and hence works could not be completed in time. The devotees are allowed for darshan till 4 pm only so that the workers could finish the task speedily. Nearly 100 labourers are engaged in renovation works. The works would hopefully be completed in three to four days, he added.
