When four people with different tastes in music come together and form a band, there will be a transcending variety in their genres that will ultimately translate into their performances. That comes as an added advantage when they give out concerts too, because at the end of the day, you will have fans of different genres coming in with their expectations.

Now, if you’re thinking of “easy listening” to be the kind of music you would listen to in the background at a lounge while sipping your coffee and reading a book, that’s not the case—there’s a lot more you can expect from The Songsmiths

That comes as an added advantage when they give out concerts too, because at the end of the day, you will have fans of different genres coming in with their expectations.

The Songsmiths were at the Hard Rock Café recently delivering one such concert that closed leaving content faces and smiles. ‘Easy listening’ is what they name the type of music they play. The Songsmiths does not just deliver good music but, leave the audience humming their tunes post the concert as well.

Now, if you’re thinking of “easy listening” to be the kind of music you would listen to in the background at a lounge while sipping on your coffee and reading a book, that’s not the case here—there’s a lot more you can expect from this band.

They are a four piece band with Saikat Basu (Joy) on the bass and vocals, Avinash Ekka on the guitar, Amol Gurwara on guitar and Sutirtha Chattrjee (Chotton) on the drums. In conversation with City tab, Saikat Basu aka Joy spoke about what music means to him. “Music is vast. There is a lot to music to restrict ourselves to just one genre,” he said.

Joy shared that the music that they play takes inspiration from genres like Rock, Disco, Jazz and Blues. The three-year old band has more than 10 originals and also play covers from famous artistes. “About 60 per cent of the songs we play are originals while the rest are covers from artistes like James Brown,

Stevie Wonder, the Beatles and more,” said Joy, and true enough, their concert had many familiar and catchy tunes like “Superstition” by Stevie Wonder, “Come Together” by the Beatles and “Redemption song” by Bob Marley among their many originals.

According to Saikat, their band gives a personal touch to a cover they are performing while keeping the essence of the original. With every original and cover they play, there is a kind of finish they give to the song that makes it “complete” and their own. With the stars as their dream they are only growing as a band as they continue to contribute to the city’s music scene and aspire to reach the sky.
