The Institution of Engineers of India, Vijayawada Chapter organised a technical talk on ‘Energy Conservation in Buildings’ here at their regional centre on Saturday. Former Chairman of the local centre and managing director of Efftronics Private Limited D Rama Krishna addressed the gathering of Builders, Industrialists and other members of the local chapter.

He said that rapid urbanization is the mega trend that is transforming the Indian economy. According to a study under the United Nations Environment Program, buildings consume about 40% of global energy, 25% of global water, 40% of global resources, and emit approximately one-third of green house gas emissions.

Residential and commercial buildings consume approximately 60% of the world’s electricity, said Rama Krishna. There is a dire need to carry out research on light passing through glass panels, walls, and decorative items. The light reflects and refracts and absorbs into medium in which it travels.

Hence one should carefully select the type of electrical systems uses in houses or commercial establishments or industrial houses for conserving energy and minimising the emissions, he added. Chairman of the local center M Kamaraju,Prof K Ravindranath, Paruchuri VVN Prasad, senior members of the local centre A V Rao, Honorary secretary G V Srinivasulu, coordinator of the programme D Ramesh Babu were present during the programme among others.
